This topic can be a can of worms - much like what motor oil to use.
Let me recommend this thread to get you started.
http://forums.banditalley.net/viewtopic.php?t=309
Read thru that, then make your decision.
About the only new thing that's come along since then is DuPont has come out with a universal Teflon spray that can be found in the Tool Dept @ Lowe's Hardware (maybe other places now, too?). Some folks really like this stuff, others don't... like any other chain lube I suppose.

Use industrial stuff. Do not buy anything saying 'special for motorcycle chains' because it is the same crap as other stuff but you pay extra for the 'motorcycle' bullshit
Industrial stuff is very cheap and it actually works because the manufacturers sell a lot more to the industry so they want to make good stuff.

I've been using white lithium grease in an aerosol can. Goes on a little thicker than most spray lube I've used in the past & doesn't fling.
Got it at Harbor Freight for $4 a can.
Says it works for chains on the side of the can.
