Coming from an ignorant Cannuck....why are they installed?? Is it because you have a "restricted" licence? Is that from too many fines...or is it a newbie licence thing? Or is it a standard modification on UK bikes?(God Save the QUEEN....)

if you're under 21, you can do a 'restricted' test, which means you can ride bikes bigger than 125cc but not more power than 33bhp. the idea is to stop young people from jumping straight on a big bike and not having the skill to control it. after riding for two years you can ride anything.

if you're over 21 you can skip this and go straight to any bike (called Direct Access or DAS).

Here it seems to be the insurance companies which do the "restricting". You can ride any bhp you like (unrestricted), but you pay through the nose to have insurance. I have some friends who pay $5100.00CDN to insure their bikes (GSXR 750) for a year.

It seems if you are rich enough you are permitted to remove yourself from the gene pool!

Thanks Tom
